It happens more often than you would think—according to Safe Kids Worldwide, a child dies of heatstroke in a vehicle every 10 days, on average. Usually, the parent forgot the child was in the car.

As part of Child Passenger Safety Week, we have a few tips to help prevent kids from being accidentally left in a hot car:

1. Leave yourself a reminder by putting something important in your back seat that you won't forget.

We know—what could be more important than your child? In many cases, however, a parent believes they dropped their child at daycare, and doesn't realize what happened until after work when it's time to pick them up. A briefcase, wallet, or smartphone that you need during the day will be missed sooner, and will prompt you to check the back seat.

2. Always lock your car doors and trunk when parked at home. This will prevent a curious child from hiding inside, and getting stuck.

3. Call 911 if you see a child alone in a car.
