There's plenty of adventure to be had in the Newtown, Langhorne, and Southampton areas. If you want to get the most out of your journey, you need to make sure your vehicle can handle everything you plan to do. Having power and cargo space is always necessary, but sometimes you need to bring a little something extra along for your trip.

A good towing capacity can make all the difference for your next trip, and the new 2019 Ford Explorer has a surprisingly impressive towing capacity. This SUV already excels in terms of cargo space and engine power, but its towing capacity takes it to the next level. Find out if it's good enough for your needs with our Ford Explorer towing capacity review brought to you by Fred Beans Ford of Newtown.

Maximum Towing Capacity

At most, the Explorer can tow up to 5,000 pounds. While its maximum capacity is certainly impressive, there are quite a few different towing capacities available, depending on which of the three engines you opt for. In order to reach the 5,000-pound capacity, you'll have to opt for  the most powerful engine and the Class III Trailer Tow Package.

Engine Options

There are three engine options available with the Explorer, and all of them are impressive in their own right. The smallest engine is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost® I4 that offers a horsepower rating of 280, along with 310 lb-ft of torque-far more power than most other standard engines in its class. When equipped with the Class II Trailer Tow Package, it can tow as much as 3,000 pounds. Otherwise, its limit is 2,000 pounds.

The second engine option is a 3.5-liter V6. This engine produces 255 lb-ft of torque and 290 horsepower, and it can pull a maximum of 2,000 pounds on its own. Equipped with the Class III Trailer Package, however, it can reach the maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

If you want the best of the best, opt for the 3.5-liter EcoBoost® V6. Offering an incredible 350 lb-ft of torque with 365 horsepower, you won't find more power anywhere else. Of course, this engine offers the peak 5,000-pound towing capacity, as it comes standard with the Class III Trailer Tow Package, so don't hesitate to put all that power to good use.

Towing Packages

To get the most out of the Ford Explorer towing capacity, you'll have to get one of the trailer tow packages. The Class II Trailer Tow Package is the first option, and it offers plenty of extra features. With the Class II option, you'll get a 4-pin trailer wiring harness and a hitch receiver.

The Class III Trailer Tow Package takes things a bit further, however. You still get the hitch receiver, but you also get a nice upgrade to a 7-wire harness and 4- to 7-pin connector. Additionally, the Class III package comes with an engine oil cooler to ensure you're able to get  that 5,000-pound capacity.
