Ford Edge vs Ford Escape: Engine Options

Let's first discuss the engine options between the Ford Edge and Ford Escape, because they are considerably different.

On the Ford Edge, you would have the following two choices:

  • 2.0-liter EcoBoost®
  • 2.7-liter EcoBoost®

The 2.0-liter will produce 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque, while the optional 2.7-liter will get you 335 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque.

If you opt to purchase the Class II Trailer Tow Package with an all-wheel drive configuration, you'll be able to pull up to 3,500 pounds.

The Ford Escape, on the other hand, offers hybrid engine options that the Edge does not. The Ford Escape has the following choices:

  • 1.5-liter EcoBoost®
  • 2.0-liter EcoBoost®
  • 2.5-liter hybrid
  • 2.5-liter plug-in hybrid

Both available hybrid engines produce up to 165 horsepower and 155 lb-ft of torque. The 1.5L EcoBoost® will get you 181 horsepower and 190 lb-ft of torque, while the 2.0L EcoBoost® takes it up a notch to 250 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque.

Some of the Escape engines also offer towing. The 2.0L EcoBoost® engine, when equipped with the Class II Trailer Tow Package, gives this model a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

Ford Edge vs Escape: Fuel Economy

It's interesting to compare the models and their fuel economy, given that the Escape offers those hybrid engines. As expected, the hybrid engines will get you considerably more miles on the road before having to refuel or recharge.

The 2.5-liter hybrid engine on the Escape will get you an EPA-estimated 44 city/37 highway MPG. Compare that to the Edge model's 2.0L EcoBoost®, which will get you an EPA-estimated 21 city/29 highway MPG. Both estimates are shown on a front-wheel drive (FWD) configuration.

As you can see, the Ford Escape model's hybrid engine is quite impressive and will be able to take you pretty far. It's a great choice for those looking to experience this newer type of engine and see for themselves the distance it can achieve.
